The jungle where all Rhino animals live

Hi all,

Does anyone have any viable solutions to importing ArchiCAD files into Rhino? I've just recently bought Rhino together with it's Maxwell render plugin to do Architectural Visualisation, however, a few of my clients use ArchiCAD, which I am familiar with through websites, but have never used, so I asked a couple of them to send me a project to play around with, basically to see if it was usable in Rhino.

Firstly, I had 2 files sent to me - one, as a .dwg and the second as a .3ds file. Both files opened up fine, and noticed everything had been converted into meshes. I applyed a few materials to some of the objects and mapped them using the native Rhino mapping tool - and this is where I started having some issues.. A few objects were mapped out fine, but some would just not work at all, no matter what I tried - which was really frustrating! Has anyone come across this before?

Cheers

Steve

As an ArchiCAD user, I haven't tried this yet, but I do have some experience with exporting ArchiCAD models to other applications. I had good results exporting to 3ds files, but I had to specify that I wanted the geometry organized according to materials and with texture mapping included.

Is it for visualization in Maxwell? There is (was?) a plugin for ArchiCAD for Maxwell.

DWG export from ArchiCAD will not give you UV-mapping. 3ds-export does this much better.
Thanks for the info Stefan, I definitely won't use the DWG option as I do want the UV mapping co-ords. On another note, as I mentioned previously, the second file I received was in .3ds format, but all the geometry was in meshes? Is there a way to export archicad files into polysurfaces? It's just that as I said before, I could map some things correctly, but other things just wouldn't work.
Exporting as obj from archicad and importing with Rhino v.5 works great, i do it all the time.

With this workflow you can have in rhino individual meshes for all archicad objects with the same material. e.g. if you have 100 object in archicad but, someone with stone material, other ones with glass and the rest with wood, ones imported youl ll have just the meshes in rhino!

Does exporting as a .obj file have UV mapping co-ords provided with the objects? And do you have the option of exporting as polysurfaces instead of meshes? As mentioned above, I was having issues mapping to objects exported out as a .3ds file as meshes.. and since I never use meshes as I'm only new to Rhino, are they any good in Architectural Visualization?

I am using Rhino SR8, and Archicad 14, and I only exporting as .3ds from Archicad, as it gives me 100% of the Archicad model.

Exporting as .obj from Archicad excludes the .gsm files. Here is the example of .obj and .3ds export:

I have exactly the opposite problem. I've made a chair model in Rhino for Mac and now need to export it to ArchiCAD. Already downloaded a 3ds In plug-in but I'm new to ArchiCAD and can't seem to put together on how to import the dammned file...

Can somebody please help me?

Or at least suggest another program for me to make scaled drawings of my rhino projects?

Thanks

Bruna.
Importing mesh geometry inside ArchiCAD does not lead to satisfying results. You can use them as geometry props, but they come in facetted and without clean 2D drawing. It might be better to use e.g. SketchUp Pro and Layout and just place the meshes in a model which you place in a Layout.

Meshes inside ArchiCAD are converted into GDL objects and if you know what you do, you can do a projection on the ground plane inside the GDL code, but you might as well do a boolean cut first, to have the section + projection and then in the end, you might as well trace the mesh with pure 2D linework in ArchiCAD for proper and clean scaled architectural/technical drawings.
A comment on this, depending on the nature of your model, I'm having a few users using the IFC plug-in I'm actively developing to exchange data between ArchiCAD and Rhino. Feel free to get in touch if you wish to learn more or try it out.

But depending on your geometry, the current IFC may also produce faceted data, but I'm happy to advise.

Cheers,

Jon
