Is Rhino suited for mechanical engineering?

Dear forum users,

How are you, guys? :)

Allow me to introduce myself first since I'm new around here. My name is Arye Segal, and I'm a 22-year-old boy from Israel. I hope I'll fit in nicely... :)

I'm about to start my own company which will offer engineering drawing services to whoever might seek it. Now, currently, I'm strongly thinking about buying Rhino because it looks like an amazing tool with which I'll be able to design complex 3D mechanical objects with great accuracy and precision.

Now, if I may, I've a few questions for you guys:

1. Is Rhino the tool I'm looking for, or am I barking at the wrong tree here?

2. I thought of using it in conjunction with AutoCAD in the following way: I'll be using AutoCAD mainly for 2D drafting, detailing and basic to intermediate 3D objects creation, and when the need for creating a complex 3D object will come up, I'll use Rhino, which is an area it excels at from what I understood... What do you guys think about this working method? As a whole design solution, is it good or bad?

3. I've heard that these two programs I just mentioned (AutoCAD and Rhino) can work flawlessly with one another. Is that really so, or is it just a promotional line?

Ahm... I believe this is it, for now... Hehe... ;)

Well,

1. Imho Rhino is well suited for mechanical engineering. As a matter of fact I can not see any reason for sticking with auto-cad at all if you have rhino3d.

2. your workflow seems somewhat strange to me. Why would you want to do basic modeling and -2d-draftsin Auto-cad? Rhino works great for that as well.

3. I've seen some buggy features when importing models to/from rhino-autocad. The layers got screwed up but all in all it works fine.

4. (Although you did'nt ask :) ) if you're solely in to mechanical engineering I think it's a simple choice: Go with rhino and forget about auto-cad all together.

My only objection so far with rhino is the the the lack of tools for converting 3d-models to 2d-drawings, making sections etc. Since I'm into building construction and architecture it's a drawback since I don't fancy the idea of manipulating lineweights manually after I've spent hours making the model.

Since mechanical engingeering is less dependant on creating paper drawings than the building industry I think you'll do just fine with rhino3d alone.
