The jungle where all Rhino animals live
Did the last update include "Pen" and "Artistic" options for viewing view planes? I don't remember them being there before.
Also, does Rhino crash for anyone else when they try either of these view types in full screen perspective?

I've tried using the pen and artistic view types on both my work and home computers, and no crashes yet.
They are more memory and video memory intensive, so I hope your RAM and video card are up to the task.
Just so you can have a comparison with your system, both my home and work computers are quad-core Xeons hyperthreaded to eight cores. Both systems have 24GB RAM, and quadro 2000/4000 video cards. Everything seems to run smoothly.

Thanks for the reply. pen and artistic work fine if I use them in 1/4 screen, just not if I'm in full screen view.
I'm using a 2-year old macbook, which isn't the fastest thing in the world.
Permalink Reply by Kunal Ghevaria on January 27, 2012 at 9:27am Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Macbook relies on the integrated graphics (Intel HD 3000 or something like that) and does not have a dedicated video card?
That sounds like the root of your display problems. Still, I'd suggest maxing out the RAM on your system. Third party RAM from Crucial is pretty cheap, and totally worth the boost.
Sounds like memory capacity. Rhino runs fine on almost any capable computer, you just have to know what the limits - usually RAM - are. The active display items run in video RAM while renders run in main system RAM. If your PC - or older MacBook is limited in either area, any display mode requiring RAM management will pose problems. Some things you'll be able to find solutions or workarounds for, while others - like this latest gee-whiz feature - you may have to live within its limitations. Not unreasonable, just unpleasant.
The systems described by Kunal in his reply to your question, while admirable, don't really relate to your situation. I recently bought what the specs report as a reasonably competent upper mid-range system, and I'm STILL dealing with internal issues not unlike those you're describing.
Our only solution seems to be to pay to upgrade. maybe you can work within the limitations you describe for awhile, but upgrading is on the horizon. Sorry ! Bloat and poor memory management programming will always be with us, Windows-OS promises to the conrtary notwithstanding. Look on the bright side - when we all go to 64 bit systems and software, all our problems will be solved ! ;) Shoot - in the mean time, if I want a successful animation run I have to move my model from my i7/64-3.4+16Gb system to my -XP/32-2.2+4Gb Laptop. Go figure !
Good luck ! Maybe someone will offer a solution to the problem or a workaround that worked for them !
Let us know how it goes -
Charley.
