RhinoJungle

The jungle where all Rhino animals live

I have never used 3d studio max, and I am beginner in Rhino.

I would like to know which are the advantages and disadvantages in the Rhino vs 3ds max comparison.

Thank you for the reply.

I guess you have to google for this.. Ihave no idea since i am a animal myself... ;)

Video of Rhino vs 3DMax

Rhino is a real 3D CAD software with some tool for mesh moddeling (other mesh tools can be implemented with different plugins).
advantages:

1)It has all the tools that make it a complete CAD software: mesuring tool, geometrical snaps

2)A large choise of plugins that add specific cad tools for jewelry, naval, molding, parametric, rendering

3)It's really easy to learn in few days for general purpose.

4)It's really cheap for a so powerful SW (you can buy an educational license for few €!).
disadvantages:

1)Really poor in mesh modelling (but the t-spline plugin gives it an edge)

2)It's hard to manage large files (forget to use 100 trees on the workspace)

3)There aren't good tools for animation still.

3Dstudio MAX is probably the most complete mesh-modeling software and has some basic nurbs tools.
advantages:

1)Most complete and powerful mesh-modeling software in my opinion

2)You can animate everything

3)No need to worry about you file dimensions.

4)Many plugins that make everything

disadvantages:

1)Not so cheap (3.400$ !!!!)

2)I'ts hard to learn everything about it.

3)No CAD tools (maybe some plugins...)

In conclusion, like every job you have to chose the proper instrument.

Don't need to buy a Ferrari if you only use it to take a tour of the block

Thank you for the replies both Roy and Enrico.

Why is this mesh modelling so important? And what is the advantage of Nurbs modelling in comparison to Mesh modelling (I heard that Rhino is great for the first one and 3ds Max for the second one).

It's true.

Well, mesh modeling is particular indicated for organic shapes like characters, where isn't necessary units precision and to handle low-poly objects. It works like to give a shape to a block of clay.

Nurbs modelelling is based on geometrical/mathematical structure ha make possible what mesh can't do. All the workflow starts froma primitives or geometrical curves (polyline, arcs ecc Particuar idicated for design, CAD,  prototyping. It works like most of the CAD sw and has a more technical approach.

If you want the best of both (NURBS, mesh) worlds, I would suggest you look at a Rhino/Cinema4D combo.  It all really depends on what you will be modeling and output needs.  As an architect, I LOVE to use Rhino to model all the structures, but will then import the (meshed) geometry into Cinema4D to add organic geometry like trees, etc.  I render out of C4D.  All that said, if you're thinking of becoming a pro CG artist (i.e. your job would be to produce pretty images), where you might likely import someone else's geometry, whether from Autocad or Revit, I would without hesitation steer you to 3DMax.
Thanks guys for this useful summary. I agree about the limitations of Rhino with respect to animation and organic modelling, but the best still CG images I have seen anywhere have been achieved with the combination of Rhino and V-Ray. Max still looks a touch artificial to me.

thank you for all the replies.

I am a student of architecture, and started using the Rhino, because I needed freeshaped form roofs and surfaces, which I could not do in Autocad and Archicad (Archicad is 99% similar to Revit). So then I imported the 3d buildings models from Autocad or Archicad into the Rhino, and made my free form surfaces and made rendering in Rhino.

After all this comments it seems I was wrong. Is 3ds max really better when it comes to free shaped forms (roofs and buildings in my case)?

Rhino is precise tool and much more suitablle for architecture as you can control the shapes/size better. I would  say Max is great for arch viz modelling but not  for production of techical drawings.

Hi Sid,

I invite you to try VisualARQ, which provides Rhino all this architecture features you mention: freeform objects integrated in a project, model with parametric architectural objects, technical drawings associated to 3D model (plans, sections, elevations, object data...). It increases a lot the workingflow for architecture 3d modeling and 2d drafting within Rhino.

best,

francesc.

Hi francesc.

Yes I know VisualARQ.... It is quite powerfull plugin. I am trying to get my department at University to buy the lab license.... Will see. ;)

Hi Sid,

that sounds cool.

Please let me know if you need further information, or have some requests. (fsalla@asuni.com)

all the best,

Hmmm..... I love Rhino but  that statement is just not  true. Vray for Max is much more advanced than Vray for Rhino,
