The jungle where all Rhino animals live
madCAM is the 3D CAM plug-in for Rhinoceros which gives the ability to perform both modeling and toolpath creation inside Rhino 3D. madCAM Entry Level is perfect for 3D CAM for CNC-milling machines. All menus for controlling madCAM Entry Level and generated toolpaths are inside Rhinoceros and stored together with your model.Started by Denny Butler. Last reply by Dan Sep 3, 2010.

Hi Mike,
I don't have a CAD of the cutter. I would use a standard 1/4" shank router bit set up for plunge cutting, with say a 5/8" radius roundover. If like the taper setup, it would need cutter diameter, cutter height, and radius of roundover (i.e. concave) or cove (i.e. convex) with diameter of plunge/sharp area in middle between the cutters. I know I have seen profiling mills shaped similarly for metalwork. Thanks - Bob
You can certainly define tapered tools in MadCAM, although my experiments with a 90degree cutter in simulation were not quite what I expected (Seemed to leave a ridge in the bottom of a 90degree groove. I'm sure I'll get better as I use it for actual cutting (of cheap stuff up front - I can picture a lot of fine wood turned to dust by mistake!) - Bob
Hi Dan,
This is something that has already been discussed, but I don't have a definitive answer. I will say though, that it is fairly easy to do by simply replicating the tool profile, and then do the proper offset both for xy and multiple curves for z. Bob do you have a cad of the profile? If so, send it to my email address below less the cdee123......gotta keep the bot activity as low as possible.
I will go ahead and contact, or attempt to contact Joakim. I don't know if Euromold is still ongoing and he is attending that show.
Mike
Yes, I see what you're saying. You cannot define a tool to resemble a router bit that will give you an accurate model in the simulation. Hmmm....
...maybe something to think about for madCAM 5. Mike, maybe when you speak with Joakim you could mention this. I know madCAM 5 is going to have a lot of new features, but I don't know if this is one of them.
Thanks for the comments. I'll give it a try. It would be nice to be able to simulate the path with a profiling cutter beyond a tapered chamfer tool! Bob
Hi Robert,
My name is Mike and I help Joakim with support here stateside, but I can promise you if you can get Dan's help take it! He is sharp with Madcam. If I can be of assistance, let me know. I think you can message me here, but if not, you can contact me via my email at cdee123turmitetoo@gmail.com and please take the cdeeand numbers out for a true email address. Mike
I've done chamfering with a chamfer tool using madCAM, so I would guess it's about the same as the router bits. Create a curve on the sharp corner of the material. Offset it out a given amount (which you will need to come up with) and move it down (again, you will need to experiment and figure out the value). Then use the "Along curves" toolpath, picking that offset curve when prompted. Use a ramp approach so that it eases into the material.
I'm new to MadCAM (and Rhino, for that matter). Just setting up a Laguna IQ 2'x3' CNC router, so nothing milled yet. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use MadCAM for 2.5D milling/V-Carving and for use with profiling router bits, like a roundover. I know I could use a ball mill in 3D, but very slow for making a sign or rounding over a guitar body! I did upgrade to MadCAM 4.3!
