Solution for mapping textures to multiple objects or grouped items

I've been having issues with materials not behaving properly lately. This was most noticeable when wrapping displacement textures to objects with fillets or rounds, or when trying to stretch a large pattern over multiple objects/surfaces.

The solution is to change how rhino is projecting mapping textures on an object.

select your object(s), then click on:
edit> material properties

from the pulldown:
texture mapping

Then click on:
add

under general, find the projection pulldown and choose:
box

This will generally do the trick for most of your texture/displacement assignments.

The attached demo render shows a texture projection for rounded cubes (from left to right):

default mapping (nothing added in the object properties)
"box" projection
3 grouped cubes with projection set to "spherical"

Hope this helps!

The reason that "Box" works for this image is that your shape most closely can be represented by a box. Just another helpful hint, once you've added a texture mapping channel, you can click the "Show Mapping" button and then a black dotted line will show up. By manipulating this (moving, scaling (in 1D, 2D, or 3D), rotating, etc.) you will actually manipulate how your texture is mapped. This is often extremely helpful when trying to make sure things like brick, tiles flooring, etc. are all real world scale. The great people at ASGvis have done a webinar that can be downloaded on their webpage and blog that goes more into the detail of how to do this.
The point here was that leaving the properties to default will mess with surface seams and fillets if you apply displacement.

Also, that mapping doesn't happen by itself and the settings for it is not in an obvious location.

I had to really dig to finally find this info, which seems to be par for the course with ASGVis.
I hope my post will help other newbs find their answers faster than I did.
