Kevin-

Hi ! Yes it was certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity - to be out there in the middle of the action, knocking out my models and handing them directly to the Project Manager, Dive Master and others on board so they could plan the next shift's activities. As expensive an operation as Chevron mounted, the ability to hand them Dimensionally ACCURATE models based on the original Engineering drawings of the platforms, the wells and detailed sonar maps of bottom conditions allowed them to plan ongoing operations in near-real-time resulting in HUGE dollar and time savings, and contributing SIGNIFICANTLY to an unrivaled safety record. Other spreads not making effective use of the above saw savings in not fielding a CAD team, but could come nowhere NEAR our cost-savings and safety record, even tho our ship was almost brand new, and therefore more expensive to field. Effective planning resulted in millions of dollars saved, time (and project duration) saved, and an umatched safety record ! To be the CAD lead on that project was a genuine honor !

See guys- its not just a pretty picture . What we're doing saves HUGE in the areas of company costs (they have to stay in business!) and in some cases, lives saved ! I guess we all need a reminder of how important what we are doing is- imagine where your employer would be if only his competition were using someone with your skills, techniques and tools !

Best of fortune to everyone, and DON'T LOSE THE PASSION !

Hi Charley,

Thanks for your kind comments. The models were indeed created in Rhino and rendered in Vray with animations produced in 3ds Max. I have to say I envy the sound of that project, working on the Siem Swordfish creating 3d models, sounds like my idea of heaven as the Marin Teknikk ships are very nice vessels and beautifully outfitted internaly.

Cheers for now.

Kev.

Kevin-

Thanks for the posting. I just wrapped up 4 years working in the Gulf of Mexico on the Siem Swordfish modeling work being performed removing the downed platforms from hurricanes Rita, Katrina and then Ike, and I have to say your posting brought some fond memories flooding back ! This is some of the finest work I've seen. From what I'm seeing here, it looks like the Boats were modeled in RHINO, Animated & Rendered using 3D Studio + Vray ?

You've set the bar. This is solid stuff, and a worthy mark for any of us to aim for !

Do well-

Charley.
